New Power Party Declaration 2018-08-21
“Condemning China’s malicious suppression of Taiwan.
Rectifying Taiwan’s name is the only means towards diplomatic subsistence.”
In regards to El Salvador severing ties with Taiwan today, the New Power Party (NPP) strongly condemns China’s suppression of Taiwan’s international space, and heeds the international community to recognize China’s destruction of cross-strait relations as well as their belligerent actions towards raising tensions in East Asia. In the meantime, the NPP hopes that the government cease its expectations that China will eventually display its goodwill towards Taiwan, and should confidently set in motion Taiwan’s path toward normalcy, constitutional reform and to support the petition in rectifying Taiwan’s name .
China’s recent coercion of Taiwan, from the circling of military jets, the press on celebrities, businessmen, foreign airline companies and hotel chains to alter Taiwan’s name, manipulating the East Asia Olympic Committee into cancelling the Taichung Youth Games, to the inappropriate use of financial incentives causing Burkina Faso, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador to sever ties, once again demonstrates that China is the culprit in destroying the peace in the East Asia region and will not cease its malicious suppression of Taiwan.
We must heed the international community to acknowledge China’s failure to force the 1992 consensus while the trade war rages on. The international community must understand that the suppression of Taiwan’s international space and the deliberate heightening of tensions by China is simply an attempt to shift the focus away from the destabilization of the political economy under internal and external pressure delivered by China. This also proves that any of China’s gestures of goodwill and their guarantees are void of credibility. We invite the international community to stand with us, in order to effectively stop China’s pernicious actions.
The New Power Party deems the foreign policy of “maintaining the status quo” can no longer be held. We have observed in recent years China’s ambition to wipe out any form of existence and participation of Taiwan, whether in commercial, political, judicial, sportive or academic arenas. Before Taiwan can complete its normalization as a nation-state, the sovereign status of Taiwan is under constant threat due to China’s regrettable actions. Therefore, Taiwan needs to make its status as an independent state known to the international community, through practical diplomatic cooperation and through the accumulation of judicial precedences.
Hence, we call on the Tsai Ying-Wen administration to readjust her foreign policy. Taiwan needs to deliberately part from the diplomatic stance associated with the anachronic discourse of Taiwan “representing China” and instead seek to lay out a foreign policy that is based solely on the Taiwanese people and the name “Taiwan”. Moreover, to execute this strategy with consistency and determination across all levels and all aspects of the diplomatic and national security agenda.
The NPP would also like to call on the political parties in Taiwan to push forward the legislative endeavors to normalize Taiwan in the upcoming session of the Legislative Yuan, especially on amending the Referendum Act to hold referendums on national territory, the national flag and to the formal name of the state. The NPP believes that the only way to defend the dignity of Taiwan and to protect our democratic and free way of living, is by exercising the Taiwanese people’s sovereignty under a democratic process to rectify the name of our country as “Taiwan”, thereby normalizing the status of Taiwan and treating China as a international counterpart.
Lastly, the New Power Party would like to inform the People’s Republic of China, that Taiwanese people will show no fear under such oppression. On the contrary, Chinese pressure will only spur our solidarity and manifest to the world the fact that Taiwan is an independent, democratic and free country.
